Unauthorized Website - The Beginning.

Stroh It seems so long ago that Tom Leykis couldn't bring in an audience at a live remote broadcast. The first time I saw Tom live in Seattle was at the Bite of Seattle in 1994 where he co-hosted a couple hours locally with Pat Cashman (a local Seattle comedian and comedy skit actor on "Almost Live"). About 60 people gathered to listen to the broadcast. This was Leykis' humble recovery. He had just been signed to Westwood One after a short run with WRKO in Boston after David Hall, program director of KFI in Los Angeles fired Tom Leykis after he had become #1 in the ratings in LA's drive time. Westwood one had signed Tom around presidential election time as a counter to all the conservative talk show hosts that had flooded the radio landscape as an attempt to get the democratic and liberal share of the listening audience. Ironically, Tom was broadcast through syndication to the most markets he ever has at 225 about this time. However, his success was to come from elsewhere. After the election was over, many markets began to drop his program. Leykis had to look elsewhere and also had to focus on specific large markets to keep his show in demand. Hopefully at this time of transition this website was somewhat helpful to assisting in his success. Leykis had sworn on his own program to never have a website. He didn't need or want one. This left the door open for what would eventually be labeled "The Tom Leykis Show Unauthorized Website" to take off. At that time there was already a good, basic fan site produced by Bob Beatie. Bob welcomed this new site in a time when internet competition was fierce and helped all he could in cooperating with this startup. What you see on the site now is basically what was produced and posted back in 1997 and while it is a little behind the quality of today's websites, it was very impressive for the time of it's creation. Initially I was contacted by the Tom Leykis Show to produce the "Official Website" but for one reason or another that offer was later rescinded. Mike Dooley and Eric Stanger were great people to work with in the early days of the Leykis show and I always have had a great personal and working relationship with Gary Zabranski and Dino Demilio as well. The show decided to hire a professional outfit through Earthlink (a sponsor of the show) to design a new website and they later hired Mitch B (always a cool guy to me) to handle the day-to-day operations. My fan site went on and on a broadcast where Tom gave credit to this site he called it the "Unauthorized Website" and I kind of liked the moniker and went with it. At this point of redesign and update this website is not to be a site dedicated to Leykis 101, Flash Friday, or whatever else. Expect to see and hear mostly archive information and media. I have thousands of hours on betamax tape of old programs that made this show what it is today. This program didn't take off... it evolved into the #1 program in many major markets. So if you want to know or hear why how it happened... come here. Otherwise, listen to the show.
